Past Events

Bantry Bay Urban Greening | 22 May 2022

As the clouds loomed over the ocean and up to Lion's Head, spirits were still sky high as we prepared to start our first ever Urban Greening Project, on International Day of Biological Diversity, 22 May 2022.

Gathered in the Queens Beach Parking lot, with piping hot coffee and pancakes from Coffee Jess & fresh juices and smoothies  from Nourish'd  we set up to plant the vacant flower bed.

The support from the local community, with friends family and kiddies in tow was amazing! We sold and planted all 90 plots to create a magical 176m² indigenous garden, filled with our favourite super plant Spekboom, wild garlic, an array of water wise succulents, African daisies, Vygies and Agapanthus which we can't wait to see in their full blue bloom!

Of course none of this would have been possible without our incredible partner Pam Golding Properties and all our sponsors Arboreta Nurseries, Reliance Compost, Leafy Space, Go Sublimation, Growing Paper and Store & More!

Keep an eye out to see where we'll green next!

At Spekboom for Climate Change, we support local and all our Spekboom is grown locally, at our local iGardi Project gardens, to provide Call 2 Care Community Partners with another way of generating income. Spekboom propagation is currently taking place in the Sebenza Gogos Garden in Gugulethu, an iGardi Project Community Garden that was kickstarted by Call 2 Care on Mandela Day 2019.

The Gogos Garden is an all-female run elderly garden in Gugulethu, which provides the neighbouring ECD with fresh nutritious vegetables, and the "Gogo's" sell the rest towards their livelihoods and create a circular economy in the garden.

Once the Spekboom is propagated, the Gogos will sell it to us at Call 2 Care, where we distribute it to you or donate it to a community that needs urban greening. All donated Spekboom will be donated to Thembani Primary School, an under-resourced school in Langa. Once we have reached our Spekboom quota for Thembani we will then move onto Unakho Children's Home in Barcelona - a community in Gugulethu that is built on a landfill.

Let's help green South Africa, improve lives through a circular economy and stop climate change together! Be a part of the Spekboom movement!
