Sibongile Creche

Kayamandi Women & Children’s Development Initiative

Kayamandi, CAPE TOWN

The Kayamandi Women and Children Development Center started as a trauma room for victims of rape and domestic violence forming a close relationship with South African Police Service and Community Safety. Historically, victims who report these crimes at the local police station, were sent back into the environment where the crime was committed, with no counselling. There was a desperate need for a trauma room where woman and children could receive counselling and a place of safety. Many of the women that make their way to the Kayamandi trauma center have toddlers that need care while the women were counselled and rehabilitated back into society. This need inspired the establishment of the Sibongile Crèche which also provides a soup kitchen to the community. Today, the crèche support 25 full-time children and reserve 5 ad-hoc daily day care services, free of charge, only for mothers seeking employment that need child care. The 6 staff members at Sibongile Crèche struggle to make ends meet while ensuring the utmost care of the children left in their care. The crèche is in dire need of upliftment across the board from facilities to consumables used on a daily basis to support the children as well as feed over 200 community members daily.
