The iGardi Project is Born at Siluncedo Educare, Imizamo Yethu, Hout Bay

Thanks to the sponsorship of UNiBA, Call 2 Care has started the iGardi Project at Siluncedo Educare, an Early Childhood Development Center situated in the heart of Imizamo Yethu, Hout Bay.

This project was generously sponsored by UNiBA . The sponsorship included the implementation of 8 iGardi Food Gardens, and 6 Educational Workshops on effective methods of landscaping, planting, soil nutrition, composting, pest management, harvesting techniques, and effective storage & cooking, to ensure the project is sustainable and long lasting. The ultimate aim of the project is for Siluncedo Educare to sign a pledge, one year from now, to completely take over the vegetable garden without Call 2 Care's support, having had all the training, resources and supportive know-how they need.

On the 2nd of October 2018, Call 2 Care met with 5 teachers, care-takers and the principal who currently work at the Siluncedo Educare, and started the first iGardi workshop. The purpose of this workshop were find out which types of vegetables are needed, create a menu to quantify the vegetables, and motivate Siluncedo Educare to take 100% accountability of the project.

Call 2 Care lead a discussion explaining the size of the garden, and posed suggestions of where it could be planted. Then, Call 2 Care and Siluncedo Educare created a list of vegetables that need to be planted to meet the needs of the school. The final step of this workshop was to draft the weekly menu. Thorough planning helps Call 2 Care quantify the number of each vegetable is required so the school is able to sustain itself for the entire year.

Overall, Call 2 Care and Siluncedo Educare were able to meet all the goals for the day. Call 2 Care was confident in their plan and pleased with the efforts from both sides. The teachers, caretakers, and principal were pleased to have their voices heard and excited to kick start the new project!
