ABOUT CALL 2 CARE'S THE PHILILE PROJECT?

The Philile Project is Call 2 Care's approach to improve lives through education

"Philile" (Nguni word): Whole, Healthy, Alive, Sound, Well, Complete.

The Philile Project is an after school program hosted in Gugulethu, Cape Town and offers a holistic way to improve lives through education by focusing on a curriculum rich in positive psychology, physical activity and environment learning. The vision of The Philile Project is to create a learning environment that is a safe organised space that builds intellectual ways of thinking so children can build confidence, values, and develop a positive identity and character. Call 2 Care also work with a youth group called Amasoja who play a key part of the program. Our program incorporate Amasoja as part of a leadership development program which will see the youth moulded into youth leaders of The Philile Project and play an active role in the program for years to come.

HOW DID 2U GET INVOLVED?

The Philile Project splits the children into different groups which rotate through a planned program

Outdoor learning

Thanks to the incredibly talented Talya Wehlburg, a dance teacher back home in Australia, the children shared her passion and talent. In no time, the collaborative workshop ensured everyone's involvement - a key skill that Talya possesses to which the children then taught her their favourite moves. This links in with our positive psychology approach as it empowers them to build confidence, explore their creativity in a safe environment while also sharing part of their culture. We unearthed a lot of talent and the kids were running up and showing us their moves long after the lesson was finished. The 2U team also got involved in taking charge of this fun collaborative dance exercise.

Character strengths and values building

The team collaborated on producing a final art piece together where each child will get a piece of the final art piece which will be painted and put together as part of the grand reveal. This collaborative exercise focuses on creativity, appreciation of beauty and excellences, teamwork and curiosity as part of the character strengths and values building (Peterson and Seligman, 2004).

Environment learning

The children learnt about seedlings leveraging the on site water wise vegetable garden and also created their own jiffy seedlings that will were taken home to be looked after and later planted in the garden once developed.
